We have ants. Not really in my pants - but did I get your attention?
We have ants. In the shower. I know. Sounds weird. It is weird!
We also have ants on occasion in the kitchen. They chewed their way through a power point to get in, so we had it replaced. They have now chewed through the grouty stuff sealing in the counter tops. Yik. Home repairs are one of the few and only times I am glad to be a renter!
[ Note to self - hurry up and be a grown up and buy a house.]
They got in the pantry and into the most random things. All the cereal and crackers and biscuits are locked away in tupperware. What did they find? Hmmm. Boullion cubes. Yik.
They also threaded their way through the screw top lid into the Vegimite. I wonder if they were disappointed once they got there?
We moved the honey and the peanut butter and potato chips to a cabinet in the dining room to fool them. How long til they figure it out?
So we have ants in the shower. In the ensuite. Upstairs.
I do not recall ever eating food in the shower or in the ensuite at all. I am almost certain the hubs has also not eaten food in the shower. My brother-in-law once drank a cup of tea in the shower but that was at his house not my house and I am sure that cannot be the reason. (Hi Neil!)
Why are there ants in my shower?

A scene
This scene takes place in the check-out line at Woolworths. A young husband and wife are purchasing grocery items for their Easter celebrations.
Husband: When are we going to get the hot cross buns?
Wife: Well I thought..(cut off by husband)
Husband: You aren't going to make them?
Wife: (delivers a withering look to now sheepish husband)
Husband: What I meant was it is a lot of work and makes a big mess and you should just relax and enjoy the long weekend and you already do so much....
(when what he really did mean was : remember last time you made them and they turned out all funny shapes and not at all bun like? And remember your philosophical objection to putting a cross on the bun so you put other random symbols on there and it was weird? And the ones from the bakery are so fresh and good?)
So guess what I am doing on Thursday? Making hot - insert symbol- buns!

Pizza Perfection
Hi everyone
As promised I made the Pioneer Woman Pizza last night. Yuuumm.
I made the dough in the morning and let it rise during the day. The dough was easier to make than I thought it would be. I usually use flat bread when I make pizza at home. Brace yourselves ladies (and gents...). We do not have Pillsbury in Australia! Not pizza base, crescent rolls, cinnamon buns. Nothing. I know this will shock the American viewers as when I visited Amy in Boston I saw about 4 rows of Pillsbury in the supermarket. How we survive without it I do not understand.
So I made the dough!

The aftermath
I made two pizzas last night and we had it again tonight as leftovers! We made the potato and leek and the tomato basil. Potato and leek is not a topping I have ever thought of having on a pizza. Man DOES IT WORK!
The tomato and basil was my fave. It was heavenly.

I certainly recommend this pizza. I think it is almost as good as the pizza at Manta Ray Cafe on Hamilton Island we had on our honeymoon. Almost!
So Hubs' show finished this weekend. I went to the final performance on Saturday night. It was wonderful. The cast really rocked it and were so into their roles after playing for a week. Here is where hubs has spent most of his time lately -

It is totally anti-climactic when a big experience like that ends. You need to wind down and re acclimatize to every day life. Here is what hubs spent Sunday doing -

Playing on his crazy old Sega Saturn he got off Ebay! Not the Wii, not the Playstation. The old Sega Saturn with arcade style games! I is really fun playing the old school games.
I hope you all had a great weekend! We sure did.
Goodnight. xx
Late correction - the Hubs was of course playing his Sega Dreamcast, not the Sega Saturn. He has both and I am clearly not up on all the models of outdated Sega gamestations.

Prize winner!
I have won my first bloggy prize! I entered the comp over at In this Wonderful Life. I love Megan's blog. Hers was one of the first I started reading and it got me motivated to start my own blog!
A few of you have commented or emailed as you are worried about looking weird for commenting on a strangers blog. DO NOT WORRY!
I want all your comments, emails etc. I would love to make contact with people out there who may like the things I like, or have ideas for recipes, or who are visiting Australia and want to know all the good restaurants!
Comment or email to say hi! I will try to visit your blog if you have one. I was a blog spy for months before I worked up the courage to start my own. I totally understand your reservations and want to reassure you. Comment away!
I cooked PW's pizza last night (ably assisted by my apprentice chef/husband) and will posit about it later with photos.
Here is a synopsis of the post: yummmmmmmmmmmm.

Happy Birthday Amy!
Today is my sister's birthday. Amy and I are the only children in the family. We grew up ranging between extreme best friend closeness and extreme nemesis style fights. Any of you out there with a sister can understand I am sure!
Last year Amy and her husband moved to Boston. America. From Sydney. Australia. Far far away.
We have been quite close in adult life. I think once we weren't living under the same roof and could avoid all the stupid sister squabbles (where is the hair dryer, I want the bathroom, that is my skirt, do you have my makeup...) we were great.
The Amy's genius husband went and got him self a PHD. In astro-chemistry or some such nonsense. Then he went and got himself a job at Harvard University. The one in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
It is a bit of a commute from Sydney to Cambridge (about 20 hours or so via plan) so they up and moved to Boston last July.
To say I miss my sister is an understatement. We visited them in Boston for Christmas (and can I say thank you to the USA for turning on a beautiful White Christmas for us). We had a great time and we are planning another trip next year.
Well today is Amy's birthday! What with the time difference I have not been able to speak with her today. I have left messages!
Happy birthday Amy! We miss you and we love you. xx G and E

The Bocconcini Mystery
Yesterday the hubs was in the mood for mexican. So I slipped on the Jessie Steele and reached out to my soul sister.

I made the enchiladas from the book and these quesadillas from the website.
I had every intention of taking step by step photos but got so swept up in the cooking I totally forgot.
That is not totally true. I took one photo of a bubbling pot of red sauce. I am sure we will see that random photo in the camera a few months from now and be totally perplexed!
Anwhoo the dinner was totally delicious! I have only made enchiladas with chicken before but hubs loved them with the ground beef.
I did the grocery shopping on my own this week due to hubs having a show. I love grocery shopping. I make a menu for the week (which I rarely follow) and then plan out what I need. I make a detailed list broken into categories such as grocery, produce, dairy, household ( hey I am a lawyer and I like lists and structure)! I also browse around the produce section for seasonal treats and the aisles for new products.
Here is a couple of items I picked up this week. What do you think I am making?

That's right! Potato and Leek pizza from the Pioneer Woman book. I am a bit nervous as I have no experience with dough. I have never made bread or pastry. I will let you know how it goes.
So here is the mystery. I also purchased this.

Bocconcini. I have never purchased bocconcini before (pathetic I know). I love bocconcini and have eaten it many times when eating out. I have never cooked with it myself.
Was it an impulse buy? No. Here is the mystery. It was on my list. Clear as day in the dairy column. I wrote it, and yet I have no idea why. I must have had a recipe in mind when I wrote it on the list. Yet now I have no recollection at all of the recipe or why I wrote bocconcini on the list. Wow.
So I have this bocconcini! Any ideas what I should make with it? I am open to suggestions!
When got home from work tonight hubs had already left for the theatre. There was a sweet suprise for me on the table. This!

I love my slow cooker. It is my favorite appliance. There is nothing better than coming home to a cooked dinner with the house all smelling-a -lovely.
Once you get past the title - Busy Woman's Slow Cooker Recipes - it is a great book. Do busy men use slow cookers? Not sure!
I can't wait to have a good look at it over the weekend.
Have a great weekend!

Boot Camp Baby
So I have a confession. In the first year of marriage I have gained a little weight. Newlywed Nineteen? (Not sure if it is nineteen but the pants don't fit!)Lots of eating out, honeymoon and other holidays, post wedding busting of the prewedding dieting... I am sure you are all nodding your head!
My work has just floated the idea of a boot camp. In the park near work twice a week. At 7.30 in the morning. Yikes. It would mean I leave home at 6.30.
[Note - this is not a suggestion just for me. It is being offered to all employees. Just in case you thought my bosses were overly worried about my personal weight gain.]
I have a few concerns (plus I am essentially lazy and in winter especially like sleeping in past 6am and don't enjoy hauling tractor tires round a park in the dark freezing morning in front of work colleagues.)
What do you think?
There are showers somewhere in the building I am told. Not on my floor or anywhere I have been.
Also, if I flake out, all my colleagues will know.
Also, do I want to shower at work and fix my hair and makeup etc?
Also, I have an expensive fandangled cross trainer at home (currently hung with many garments overflowing from my second closet. Pathetic I know).
Should I just clear off the cross trainer and have a go at home?
I made a semi-hasty dash up the stairs at the train station this morning and was a little worried by how short my breath was, given I am otherwise young and healthy.
If there are to be babies next year I best get my body in shape now!

Pretty Committee
Hi there! Happy Wednesday folks. Hump day. I like the concept but calling it hump day sounds kind of rude.
So just a week into my new life as a blogger I am already neglecting you. I have been so busy (which I am sure is an excuse that has NEVER been used before). I will be a better blogger from now on!
Hubs and I went to the zoo on Sunday. The baby elephants were so adorable. Luk Chai is 8 months old and Mr Shuffles was only 10 days old when we were there. He was tiny! About up to the waist of the zookeeper. Here are some photos of the little guys.

I am so excited that we will be able to take our children and grandchildren to the zoo in years to come and see these beautiful majestic creatures as they grow up!
I received a very exciting package in the mail this week! A special box of love from my favorite online purveyor of wondrous things - strawberry.net. Rrrrrrrrrr.
I got Estee Lauder Daywear plus. It has SPF so will go right under my primer in the morning!

I also got Clinique Repairwear Deep Wrinkle Concentrate I don't want you to think I have deep wrinkles to concentrate on - I just don't ever want to get them!

My final purchase is the big one. The grand dame of moisturiser.

I can't quite justify a Chanel bag or suit, but I deserve the face cream! Precision Maximum Radiance Cream.
Maximum. Radiance.
It is wonderful. I want to dive into it and swim around in it. It looks fancy, what with the interlocking Cs on the lid. It smells divine. My skin is certainly more radiant and bright and full. Imagine how it will look in a week?
Hubs' show is doing well. They wrap up this weekend with Friday night, a matinee and an evening show on Saturday. It will be strange having my husband back!

High School fun
On Saturday night I went to a "High School" themed birthday for a sweet family friend. Before I start this let me tell you about High School in Australia. We all wear uniforms. Every school, mandatory. We play rugby league and rugby union, not American football. We do not have cheerleaders. We do not have proms - we have formals. We do not have Prom Queen (or even Formal Queen).
As such the overall trend of the party was to dress like it was an American High School - so fun!

Here is the birthday girl - Lisa the cheerleader on the right. Her two sisters were hosting the party. Michelle on the left is in a netball uniform (hilarious and ironic as she did everything in her human power to avoid sports at school) and Carly in the centre is a band geek. She had a recorder sticking out of her back pack and the dorkiest shorts, hat and glasses. I sure hope they aren't just things she had laying around her closet...
There were loads of geeks, emo kids, some traditional uniforms (yikes how do these girls fit in those uniforms??). Most of the adults dressed as teachers which is really lame -o as they ARE all teachers! Including my English teacher mother and retired teacher father.
My costume was....Prom Queen! I made a super cute sash (at least I though so...) and had a tiara. Unfortunately I was one of two prom queens that night. DAH DAH DUM.
I actually got in a fight with the other Prom Queen. Can you believe it? As I was inside signing the guest book her and a posse of drunk meat head boys decide to provoke me, making snide and bitchy comments about me being an inferior Prom Queen. Hmm. They suggested we have a "dance off" to determine who was the true Prom Queen. Hello? I am a stone cold sober 32 year old lawyer and I am not going to "dance off" with a drunk 20 year old bimbo. I joked along with them thinking they were kidding around. They she got REALLY nasty and made comments about my dress (which is a dress I love and wore to my engagement party), shoes etc.
Yes she started it, but friends I ended it. She was stupidly unaware that she picked a fight with a sober woman with ten years on her who argues with super smart people for a living. A drunk light weight girl was no match for me. I think I may have referred to her skanky spray-on black mini dress, platform stripper shoes and scraggy hair. Ouch. I am not proud of myself for stooping to her level - but it was a genuine High School experience!
Here are some other fun pics from the party.

Emo kids, Dorks, cool kids (??), class photo and me with Lisa and Carly. See I am an elegant Prom Queen. There are no other pics of me as I was taking photos all night!

Here are the birthday girl's parents making a speech. Look in the background and you will see my rival Prom Queen!
I hope you all had a great weekend!

Opening Night Triumph
Opening night...
It's opening night!
It's my husband's latest show
Will it flop or will it go?
The cast is taking its final bow
Here comes the audience now
The doors are open: they're on their way...
Let's hear what they have to say!
It was great! It was really good. Can you hear the suprise in my voice? Now I am a supportive wife and would always go to the hubs shows. (I saw Rent like 19 times when he and some friends did that and I HATE THAT SHOW IT IS SO DEPRESSING - anyway). I also know he will be good as he practiced and rehearsed for a million hours and he is an amazing musican.
However. This show is called All Shook Up. Yes my firends, the Elvis way. It is a show where every single song is an Elvis hit, worked into the story in a Mama Miaesque way. That is not the tricky part. You see the story is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Hmm. You see my concern?
Shakespeare and Elvis? I WAS WRONG! The story was hilarious as only the Shakespearean comedies can be and the Elvis songs were chosen perfectly to fit into the story. It really was very good.
I didn't take any photos, which is a shame as we had lots of friends and family there. I will go again for closing night (and maybe a matinee or two..) and take some photos.
I am currently reading this.

It is really good. I am not a dancer by any stretch (pardon the pun!) I do take a ladies ballet class twice a week (including 8am on a Saturday - who oh why?). I also took ballet as a child. My dreams of prima ballerina-hood were crushed the summer between 5th and 6th grade when as an 11 year old I all of a sudden didn't look like the other girls!
As an adult I now love my curvy hour glass figure but it would not have suited life as a ballerina!. Also I was not very good.
The book is however good. Lots of good ideas about nutrition, stretching, energy and lifestyle. I generally read many books at a time. I read on the train, before bed, in the line at the post office, during commercial breaks on TV...Pretty much whenever I can. I have many different books going at once. from time to time I will share them with you!
Tonight I have a 21st birthday party for a family friend. My parents are going too but of course hubs misses out as he has a show. :(
The theme is High School. Some people are going as cheer leaders, football guys, dorks, emo kids etc. My costume is a secret for now!

Comfort food
Hi there friends
I had a looong day in Court today. It was the kind of day that propels a girl headlong toward the comfort food. I am a savory person. Not sweet (ha ha!) Give me cheese, bread, olives etc over cake or chocolate any day.
Today my poison was Spaghetti Aglio Olio (translated as what I cook when my husband isn't home). It is so funny that the first recipe I am sharing is no so much as a recipe as three ingredients tumbling together! I really do cook proper things too - I swear!
Spaghetti Aglio Olio

Spaghetti
Garlic
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Parmesan Cheese
(add chilli, parsley or whatever floats your boat).
Cook the pasta as you normally would.
Heat up the evoo and add the garlic. It won't need long and watch out not to burn it!

Toss the pasta through the lovely garlicy oily mix then add cheese! It is that easy.

Bon Appetit!
What is your comfort food?

Musical widow
I am a musical widow! You know like a golf widow? I am husbandless as my talented musician hubs is rehearsing for a show that opens this weekend. He is in the band playing guitar which is his calling in life!
The only time we see each other is when I wake him at 7am when I leave and he wakes me at 12pm when he gets home. :(
The plus side will be Friday night...Opening night - I am singing that to myself like in The Producers. I love watching / hearing him perform and am so proud!
Anyhoo as a musical widow I have had to amuse myself with other pursuits (enter blogging). The other negative of the absent husband is having to wait for TV shows! We have the final Big Love recorded to watch but I will have to wait for him. (Or will I? what are the odds he will look at this blog and find out if I watch it?)
To make up for all the time he is spending rehearsing Hubs has suggested that we go on a date to the Zoo on Sunday! Sydney has a wonderful zoo. There is a new addition too! This little guy Mr Shuffles.

He was only just born and will not be on display. The zoo staff thought he had died in utero and were expecting a still birth. When the calf was delivered alive it was a miracle! It is a HUGE story here as the breeding programme is so important to the world.
This little guy is Luk Chai and he will be on display. He was born in July and is old enough to go into the public. There was a TV campaign with adds of him playing and frolicking and now every Australian child (and some grown up people...) want a pet baby elephant! Hopefully he will be playful on Sunday!

World Premiere
Hi there! Welcome to my world. Welcome to my secret double life!
My name is Elle and like a lot of you in the blogosphere I have been enjoying other people's blogs for some time. I felt it was time to step up and contribute. I hope you come along!
This blog will be about half of my double life - my wife life. This is the life I live with my wonderful husband of one year, making a home, building a life and enjoying each day. I cook, I bake, I wear vintage aprons and read ettiquette books. I love 50s housewives and books and movies and long for a simpler time. We live in the suburbs of Sydney, Australia close to our families and friends.
My other life is very different. I am a lawyer and run a busy litigation practice in a government department. I argue and fight for a living in a world still dominated by men. I am fierce and I love my work. Few of my colleagues (or adversaries) would suspect that I have a Jessie Steele collection and that the Pioneer Woman is my soul sister!
Ssssh! It is a secret. I like having a part of my life just for my husband and family and I cannot wait to share it with you.
A million kisses to my friend Ashley Brooke for this wonderful header. Check her out - she is amazing!
